What can I do with a HostingRails.com account?

Beginning webmasters

You can develop your website with FrontPage or a similar editor, easily upload your files, have your site up and running in no time, and take advantage of unlimited email hosting, webmail, and mailing lists that we offer. Plus, if you want to venture into PHP, Perl, Python, Ruby on Rails, etc... you can!

Perl, Python, and/or PHP developers

If we don’t have a module or plugin installed that you need, let us know and we'll install it for you. An added bonus for you is that because we target the Rails community our servers are less packed than the industry standard because we offer various application server instances that use a relatively large amount of memory.

Ruby/Rails developers

Here’s what it comes down to; we're here to provide you with the most robust and stable shared hosting environment for your Rails application that the industry has to offer. We love to see our client sites' become successful, survive various web phenomena like Slashdotting and/or the Digg Effect without downtime, and scale up accordingly to VPS and multi-server dedicated environments.

When will I know it's time to upgrade to a VPS?

On the "Pay-as-you-go" plan, as your applications grow and consume more bandwidth, memory, and disk space, your monthly cost will go up. While this can be tracked and controlled closely, as soon as this monthly cost is larger than the cost for our VPS hosting plans then you can make your own decision whether it is worthwhile to make the switch. From our experience of hosting Ruby on Rails applications over the years, applications that are using a heavy amount of resources are much better off in VPS or dedicated environments, where load times and server stability are dramatically improved. On the Basic through Platinum plans, you will receive warnings if your resources usage is too high and we will suggest a VPS option if we feel it is appropriate for you.

Why choose HostingRails.com as my Ruby on Rails Hosting provider?

Because we love Ruby on Rails and expect our clients to actually use it!

Traditional hosting companies dread Ruby on Rails because it uses more system resources than other languages, which means they cannot pack as many clients into a server.

We are experts in scaling Rails applications from shared to VPS and multi-server dedicated environments

More often than not the reason why shared servers can become less reliable than VPS or dedicated solutions is because clients who are ready to upgrade are not identified and proactively consulted. With over three years of Ruby on Rails hosting experience, we have learned how to identify these clients and provide smooth upgrade experiences.

Our support staff are experienced with Rails

Too many hosting companies are staffed by employees who don't know Rails and don't have time to develop Rails applications on their own. Many clients come to us seeking refuge from the frustration they have experienced with their old hosts.

We respond quickly to necessary updates and security patches for Rails

For example, remember the sudden Rails 1.1.5 - 1.1.6 security releases back in 2006? The quick 2.0.2 release at the end of 2007 which allowed, for example, rails:freeze:gems to work with RubyGems 0.9.5? The later releases up to 2.2.x have not been quite so dramatic, but back then our servers were updated within hours of each announcement. Because we're focused on Ruby and Rails and develop exclusively with it ourselves, it's naturally easier for us to stay on top of the latest news.

We have user-developed, step-by-step tutorials to help you deploy and troubleshoot Rails applications on our servers

Check out the QuickStart Deployment Tutorials section of our site and see the support that is already available to you online.

We are happy to install RubyGems for you!

Just ask us what you need and we'll hook you up.

We keep up with the flow of Rails information

Our RSS readers are full of Rails feeds, our IRC clients are full of Rails chatter, our monitors are full of Rails screencasts, and our iPods are full of Rails podcasts. Essentially - we try to keep up and stay as responsive as possible.
