Easy password protection

Is there an easy way to password protect a web application I have running? E.g. use htaccess or something similar?

I'm running a third party rails app to which I wanted to add security. I was hoping I could add security without editing the rails app. Thanks for the response though.
I grabbed the first avatar I found on the forum because I'm too lazy to come up with my own and the signup process required an avatar.
