Email to blog function in Wordpress - trouble accessing mail with wp-admin

Hello everyone,

I've set up a WordPress blog at and have enabled 'email to blog' in WordPress.
I've also created a mail account specifically for this task at my domain.

Having copied all the setup details into the WordPress setup, I've emailed the account a test post, and it's sitting happily in the mailbox.  However, when I visit wp-mail.php (which will
move the post into the blog database) I receive an error:

POP3 connect: Error [-1214362424] []

Is this because hostingrails are not configured to allow this sort of thing (a php script accessing the server, as opposed to a piece of client software)?

Kind regards,
Ian

Hi there - the servers should allow this....its most likely a problem with the script and/or the settings you've given it.  Are you certain that you have entered the pop username, hostname, and password correctly?

William, thanks for getting back so quick.  Sadly, having posted the question to support@ I got the following response:

"Access to POP service is only available via an email client. You cannot access your POP account using  a script.

At the moment, we do not offer this feature. There is no other alternative at this time. It has been added to our list of client requested features and may be included in a future service upgrade."

Looks rather like Netfirm's response, documented http://wordpress.org/support/topic/82109

Shame!

Iand - the server should be able to handle this.  There's no reason why you couldn't build your own email client within your account using cURL or something - and ActionMailer for Rails can be configured to receive emails from a pop account.  We'll post back here shortly.

Hi Iand,

We have made some configuration changes on the mail server and you should be able to configure "Blog By Email" now.

Make sure that you follow the steps mentioned at http://codex.wordpress.org/Blog_by_Email
If you are still experiencing issues, please reply to the helpdesk ticket with the Admin username and password for your WordPress installation and we will check what is causing the issue.

Sijin,

Thanks for this, I've got it working with my WordPress blog, now to see if I can get it working with WordPress Mu.

Cheers!

Yep, everything working on both Wordpress, and Wordpress Mu.  Cheers!
