What do people use for backing up data? Is this a simple case of rsync, or do you prefer the newer remote storage sites like Amazon S3 with s3sync?
Best way to do remote backups?

So, I have a database. HostingRails says that regular remote backups are a good idea.

A simple mysqldump and rsync will do, sure.

Also know that we've been taking daily backups for a long time across our entire server fleet. We haven't official announced it yet or guarantee anything - but know that its there just in case.

good afternoon,
i've read (hope) all posts regarding backups on hostingrails. currently you have two options to store externally your backups: send via ftp or e-mail OR use Amazon S3 service (which is for $$$).
but there is the FREE google mail storage option (gdisk, gspace) which is quite accessible, and there is the gmailfs http://richard.jones.name/google-hacks/gmail-filesystem/gmail-filesystem.html) which works well on linux.
i think many of us have problems storing externally our backups, can we get support for gmailFS from hostingrails?

Hi there - I wouldn't recommend using GMail storage space. We actually do take daily backups of your data but are waiting to announce it officially until NOV or DEC when we will be releasing a bunch of new features and plans.

so gmail is forgotten, okay.
do the backup feature will be included in all plans, or some of us will have to upgrade our accounts?
thanks a lot, the backup feature was a little itsy-bitsy

The backup feature is included for the beginner-platinum shared plans, yes. However, even when we announce the feature officially, we still cannot absolutely guarantee the quality or presence of the backups and thus encourage clients to take their own backups as well.
